Can’t Switch Off at Night? Create a Calmer Bedtime Routine With Yoga
The day may be over but sometimes the mind does not get the message. Thoughts about tomorrow’s schedule, unfinished work, family responsibilities or simply the habit of staying connected to screens can make it difficult to transition from a busy day to a restful evening. Creating a calming bedtime routine can help make that transition more intentional and yoga can be a gentle part of it.
Unlike an intense workout, an evening yoga practice can focus on slower movements, comfortable stretches and mindful breathing. The purpose is not to challenge yourself physically but to gradually shift your attention away from the day’s activities and towards your body and breath.
Practising gentle movements before bed can also create a clear boundary between your active hours and your personal time. Instead of moving directly from work, dinner or screen time into bed, a few quiet moments of yoga can give you an opportunity to slow your pace.
Breathing practices can be particularly useful as part of this transition. Bringing your attention to slow, steady breathing encourages you to pause and become more aware of the present moment instead of continuously thinking about what needs to happen next.
Your evening routine does not need to be lengthy or complicated. Even a short, consistent practice can become a familiar signal that the day is winding down. You can pair it with other calming habits, such as reducing screen exposure, keeping your surroundings comfortable and maintaining a consistent bedtime.
It is also important to remember that yoga is not a guaranteed solution for sleep difficulties. Persistent sleep problems may have different underlying causes and should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Think of evening yoga as a way to create a little more space between a hectic day and bedtime. Sometimes, winding down begins with simply giving yourself permission to slow down, breathe and be present.
